Trying to thwart InBev bid.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Anheuser-Busch, the target of an unsolicited bid by InBev, is holding preliminary talks with Grupo Modelo about a possible combination.

From the story (subscription required):

Anheuser-Busch Cos. has begun preliminary talks with Mexico’s Grupo Modelo SA about a possible combination of the brewers that could help Anheuser thwart an unsolicited takeover bid by InBev NV, according to people familiar with the matter.

Anheuser approached Carlos Fernandez, chief executive of Modelo and an Anheuser director, about a deal in recent weeks, after news surfaced that InBev was weighing a bid for Anheuser, these people said.

InBev made its takeover plans official Wednesday, offering to buy the iconic Budweiser maker for $46.4 billion in cash, or $65 a share.
